Laponia ski tour
From hut-to-hut in Laponia World Heritage Site
Join our hut-to-hut tour on skis in Laponia World Heritage Site and experience the arctic spring with warmer days and cold nights. All the food is transported to the huts in advance and we only carry our personal clothing, lunch for the day and some safety gear.
Our idea is to enjoy the arctic spring in Laponia World Heritage Site, ski with lighter backpacks and stay in cozy mountain cabins
During the days we explore Padjelanta, Stora Sjöfallet and Sarek National Parks on skis. We mix days when we ski from hut-to-hut with optional day trips from the cabins. In the evening, when the temperature drops, we have dinner together and sleep comfortably in warm mountain huts.
Join us and experience:
- A hut-to-hut tour in Laponia World Heritage Site
- The arctic spring with warmer days and cold nights
- Spectacular mountain views
- An active but relaxed vacation
- Good food with local specialties

DAY 1 ARRIVAL JOKKMOKK – AKKA (L,D)
We will pick you up at the bus station in Jokkmokk and drive you to our place just outside Jokkmokk. We give you an introduction to the tour and check the equipment before we head west towards Laponia World Heritage Site. Along the way we stop at Naturum by Stora Sjöfallet, an exhibition about the nature and culture in the World Heritage Site Laponia. We continue along a winding mountain road to Ritsem from where we travel across the lake Akkajaure by snowmobile. We’ll have dinner and stay overnight in the cabin.
DAY 2 AKKA – GISURIS (B,L,D)
We start the day with a generous “mountain breakfast” before we begin our hut-to-hut tour on skis by following the frozen river Vuojatädno. The river leads us up to Kutjaure lake where we ski across the ice to Gisuris mountain cabin on the other side. We have dinner and sleep well in the cabin after a full day in the mountains.
Distance on skis: 15 km, elevation gain/loss: +150/-50, estimated time out skiing: 6-8h
DAY 3 SAREK AND STORA SJÖFALLET NATIONAL PARKS (B,L,D)
In Gisuris we have a day to explore the Sarek and Stora Sjöfallet National Parks. Maybe we get the chance to see tracks from foxes and wolverines living in the area. If the weather and the condition of the group allows us to, we can climb one of the easier peaks.
DAY 4 PADJELANTA NATIONAL PARK (B,L,D)
We’ll slide down the mountain side to lake Kutjaure connecting all the three National Parks Sarek, Padjelanta and Stora Sjöfallet. We continue through Padjelanta National Park to Kutjaure mountain hut where we stay for two nights.
Distance on skis: 10 km, elevation gain/loss: +100/-100, estimated time out skiing: 4h
DAY 5 KUTJAURE MOUNTAIN HUT (B,L,D)
We’ll explore the area around Kutjaure mountain hut on a day trip. The area is still an undiscovered place for most skiers and we often get the mountain for our self.
DAY 6 HEADING BACK TO AKKA HUT (B,L,D)
Our last full day traveling hut-to-hut on skis takes us through a sparse mountain birch forest contouring the majestic Ahkka Mountain. We’ll finish the day with a sauna in Ahkka cabin and a final dinner together.
Distance on skis: 17 km, elevation gain/loss: +50/-150 m, estimated time out skiing: 6-8h
DAY 7 DEPARTURE AHKKA (B,L)
After finishing the breakfast, we’ll get a snowmobile transport across the lake to Ritsem where we continue in minivans back to Jokkmokk. Enjoy a hot shower and lunch in Jokkmokk before starting your journey home.
Small groups and experienced guides
The team will be up to 8 guests and one guide and we’ll need a minimum of 3 guests in total to give it a go. The guide has earlier experience from leading hut-to-hut tours on skis in Laponia World Heritage Site. Sometimes there is also a second guide or a trainee in the team.
Accommodation and comfort
Six nights in mountain cabins. Cozy, basic cabins often with scenic surroundings. 2-6 persons in each room/cabin sleeping in bunk-beds. Mattresses, pillows and duvets available, outhouses outside the cabins. No showers, running water, electricity, cell-phone coverage or WIFI.
The food
The food will be transported to the huts in advance so you’ll only be carrying the lunch for the day and 1-2 liters of water. We start the day with a hearty breakfast in the cabins in the morning followed by a simpler lunch somewhere in the mountains during the day. In the evening is where the magic happens. We want you to try the best that the north of Sweden has to offer. At least the best that you can have in a cabin far out in Laponia World Heritage Site. Actually, good food is also important to stay warm and happy all day.
Meeting point and how to get here
We will meet you at Jokkmokk bus station. If you choose to arrive one day earlier we recommend you to stay at Jokkmokk Guesthouse. Pickup can also be organized from there.
Meeting time: At 10.00 on day 1
We’ll finish the tour in Jokkmokk before 16.00 on day 7. Before you start your journey home you will get a chance to take a hot shower.
Solo travelers
Most of our guests travel on their own and some travel as couples, family or friends. Traveling solo is a great way to experience new areas and to find new outdoor friends.
What to bring
We supply you with all skiing and safety equipment. What you need to bring is your clothes and some small things.
We reserve the right to make changes
Nature is a dynamic place and we may need to adjust the route and the itinerary according to the current weather conditions. We are also in contact with representatives for the local reindeer herders’ communities and other local actors to collaborate in the best way possible.
Common asked questions and answers
Do I have to be super-fit?
You’ll need to be an active person to join the Laponia ski tour. We will be out all-day skiing in the mountains. Two of the days we are planning to do day trips when you can choose to rest if you prefer. Please read through the requirement listed further up and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or would like to discuss your experience level.
How heavy will my backpack be?
You’ll be carrying a backpack of around 10-12kg with your personal gear and some safety gear that you’ll get in Jokkmokk. The food will be transported to the cabins in advance but you will be carrying your lunch for the day and 1-2 liters of water.
How cold will it be?
During a week in Laponia we see all kinds of weather. We can experience sunshine and -10C degrees during the day but also +5C degrees with rain and strong winds. But don’t worry too much about the cold. Pack according to the packing list and listen to good advice from the guide about how to stay warm during the day.
I am not a good skier; can I still go?
The skiing is not very technical, it is more about endurance. BUT, we have to get from hut-to-hut on skis during the day. Clear speaking, you can’t be too slow or fall too often.
I have high blood pressure; can I still go?
We don’t automatically say no just because you have a medical condition but it should not be a high risk factor for you or the group. We recommend that you talk to your doctor and make sure you have medication that you know works well for you. AND please let us know when filling out the application form and we can discuss this with you before we enter Laponia.
I am a vegetarian; can I join the team?
We are used to handling most food preferences and allergies, just let us know when filling out the application form. BUT with limited cooking space we can’t handle too advanced requests or guarantee that it will be totally free from gluten or lactose etc. If you have a severe allergy please contact us to discuss this with us.
