Jokkmokk winter market
Frozen hawkers dressed in thick furs, steaming meat soup and a “renrajd” (reindeer traditionally marching) at full speed in the middle of the main street. These are just some of the things that happen in Jokkmokk at the beginning of February. For more than 400 years, the traditional winter market has been organized in Jokkmokk during the coldest days of winter. Nowadays it is a festival for all of Sapmí, but from the beginning it had a completely different purpose.
The history of Jokkmokk winter market
What nowadays is a fantastic meeting place and tourist magnet started in the early 17th century as a way for the Swedish monarchy to gain control over the population of northern Sweden. The Swedish state not only wanted to spread the word of God, but also to be able to collect taxes on trade. During the Middle Ages, the Sami had conducted extensive trade with, among others, the Hanseatic League in Germany and parts of Russia. In that way, economic prosperity had been built up, and in particular leather from here was well-known. Gaining control over trade was not only a way to get a share of the wealth, but also to secure the borders with Russia.
The Swedish state not only wanted to spread the word of God, but also to be able to collect taxes on trade
Fixed market places were therefore established in the vicinity of the Sami’s winter areas, with several advantages. Everyone gathered around the winter grazing area for the reindeer at that time of year. Lakes and rivers were frozen and facilitated travel and transport of goods. The meeting place was ready.
Over the centuries, the market has changed to become the winter festival it is today. The Sami were Christianized and churches were built. Society slowly took shape with houses and roads. During the 20th century, the market was shortened to the three days it is today. Guidelines were put in place to regain control of sales and the increasing flow of tourists. During the 400th anniversary in 2005, Jokkmokk’s market attracted 80,000 visitors from all over the world.
What to expect?
Jokkmokk market is so much more than just hawkers and commerce – it’s a winter festival for Sapmí that brings the whole county of Norrbotten together. But don’t miss the market itself! In addition to traditional market goods such as pewter bracelets, checkered shawls and reindeer skins, there are local delicacies, arts and crafts from all over Norrbotten. However, trading is only a small part of the whole experience. During the market days, the Sami culture and traditions becomes more visible in town. Concerts, lectures and cultural events are organised. Discussions with high ceiling. Food culture flourishes and so do exhibitions. Many activities are organized in and around Jokkmokk throughout the week.
Advices for a successful market
The first and perhaps most important tip is to arrange accommodation well in advance. Some hotels are fully booked already a year in advance! If hotels and hostels are fully booked, you can search on Facebook or Blocket for accommodation, as many rent out their homes privately during the market. Or search nearby locations. Several tourism companies, including Laponia Adventures, organize holiday packages where accommodation is included along with a variety of activities.

Jokkmokk’s market takes place during the coldest period here in the north and “the market coldness” is a term. The temperature can drop to -40 degrees celsius but more often stays around -20C. You will have a much more pleasant experience of the market if you dress properly warm! North of the Arctic Circle, it is always fashionable not to freeze. Layers upon layers of clothes, warm shoes with thick soles and room for extra wool socks. Thick hats and gloves.
Take the custom where you come. Here you have the chance to take part in and learn a lot about the Sami culture. Taste local delicacies, listen to stories, take part in lectures and the cultural history inside Ájtte fjäll and Sami museum.
Also take the chance to see more of Jokkmokk than the market stalls and the “renrajd”. Join us searching for the large Sarek moose that live in the forests around Jokkmokk in winter or sit around the fire on a dark evening and look for the Northern Lights. There are plenty of activities!
