Canoeing in Pärlälven Nature Reserve - Laponia Adventures

Canoeing in Pärlälvens Nature Reserve

A multi-day canoe tour under the midnight sun

A canoe tour in Pärlälven Nature Reserve, a journey through untouched, wild nature with old-growth forests, low mountains and clear clean water. Along the way we’ll fish where we can and also eat the fish we catch. If the weather permits, we cook over an open fire and live the calm outdoor life. There are good chances of seeing reindeer, moose, eagles and other wildlife.

Our idea is to explore the Pärlälven Nature Reserve and experience the quiet wilderness life

The trip begins with a shorter hike with day packs to Peuraure where canoes and most of the gear are waiting. At a leisurely pace we make our way downstream and west towards Karatsjön where we are picked up a week later. Sometimes we paddle across elongated lakes and follow calmly flowing streams to sometimes portage the canoes past wild rapids. Along the way we sleep in tents or under the open sky depending on the weather and wind. If the opportunity arises, we make small excursions on foot.

Common asked questions and answers

How heavy will the backpack be on the first day?

We’ll be hiking with a day pack with snacks/lunch, a warm jacket and rain gear. We estimate the weight of the pacs to be around 5kg.

Can I leave some luggage in Jokkmokk?

Absolutely! You can leave your travel luggage at our place in Jokkmokk.

Måste jag vara väldigt vältränad?

The canoe tour in Pärlälven Nature Reserve requirers you to be comfortable staying in a tent during several days in a row. If it is raining, you may not be able to completely dry up every evening. The hiking is relatively ease. The canoeing can be a bit strenuous if it gets windy but we do not have to cover large distance everyday. We’ll also be portaging some rapids and we count on everyone pitching in as much as they can. We want you to have previous experience from canoeing. Please read through the requirements listed further up and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or would like to discuss your experience level

How cold can it get?

When canoeing in Pärlälven Nature Reserve we can face all kinds of weather. It can be sunshine and + 35 degrees celsius but also +10 and rainy and windy. The night temperature can drop even a few degrees lower. But don’t worry to much about the cold. Read the packing list and listen to advices from the guide team about how to stay warm.

Will there be a lot of mosquitoes?

There will be mosquitoes. How much depends on the temperature and how much rain we get during the weeks before our tour. But also how windy it is during the week that we are out. We do our best to choose camping spot and have breaks where there is a light breeze that keeps most of the mosquitoes away. If you are sensitive to insects we recommend that you bring a mosquito hat and repellent. If you are allergic, please discuss with your doctor if you should bring some antihistamin.

I have high blood pressure; can I still go?

We don’t automatically say no just because you have a medical condition but it should not be a high risk factor for you or the group. We recommend that you talk to your doctor and make sure you have medication that you know works well for you. AND please let us know when filling out the application form and we can discuss this with you before we head out.

I am a vegetarian; can I join the team?

We are used to handling most food preferences and allergies, just let us know when filling out the application form. BUT with limited cooking space we can’t handle too advanced requests or guarantee that it will be totally free from gluten or lactose etc. If you have a severe allergy please contact us to discuss this with us.
