Aktse winter - ENG - Laponia Adventures

Northern lights and off-grid cabinlife

An arctic winter experience in a cosy cabin surrounded by the peaks of Sarek national park

On this new and unique wintertour we will stay in the area of Aktse, on the border of Sarek national park. We will have our base-camp in a cosy woodheated hut and live a simple life without electricity or mobile reception and spend the evenings looking out for northern lights. Our days will be filled with activities such as skiing and snowshoeing in the mountains with the surrounding peaks of Sarek national park. We will also try out ice-fishing on the lake, making traditional Sámi bread over an open fire and learn more about the nature and Sámi culture in the area. One day we will meet up with a experienced park-ranger to look for tracks and wildlife in the area. In the evenings we will enjoy a traditional dinner made by our host and chef Caisa, who has roots from the area and Sámi culture.

On Northern lights and off-grid cabinlife we experience the area Aktse on the border of Sarek national park and enjoy days of simple living and breathtaking mountain views

This is the perfect tour for our curious and winter-loving guests. Maybe you have been looking out for a tour where you do not have to be experienced or a good skier to still enjoy and have a full winter experience in the mountains, together with a group. At least the best that you can have in a hut far out close to Sarek National Park. Actually good food is also important to stay warm and happy all day and night. We start the day with a hearty breakfast in the hut in the morning followed by a simple lunch indoor or outside in the mountains during the day. During the evening is where the magic happens!

Itinerary

We reserve the right to make changes

Nature is a dynamic place and we may need to adjust the itinerary according to the current weather conditions. We are also in contact with representatives for the local reindeer herders’ communities and other local actors to collaborate in the best way possible.

Included meals marked each day with B=breakfast, L=lunch and D=dinner

DAY 1 ARRIVAL IN LULEÅ AND JOKKMOKK (B,L,D)

We will pick you up in Luleå at around 13.00. The drive to Jokkmokk takes two hours and when we arrive we will enjoy a welcome “fika” (an afternoon tea/coffeebreak) at our place in Jokkmokk. We will introduce you to the tour and try out some equipment. After that it is time to go to Åsgård Guesthouse, where you have time to check in and maybe get a shower before eating a hearty dinner at our host Caisa’s foodstudio.

DAY 2 HEADING TO THE MOUNTAINS (B,L,D)

After breakfast at Åsgård Guesthouse we pack the mini-van and head west towards Seitevarre, a one hour drive. There we will change from car to snowmobile, taking us another hour and all the way to the cabin in Aktse. (On our way we will have good chances of seeing wildlife such as moose.)
Our stay in Aktse starts with a nice lunch and during the afternoon we will have time to settle in the cabin, fetch wood, make a fire and go get some water from the lake. After dinner in the cabin, if the weather is nice and clear, we head out to look for northern lights.

DAY 3 DAYTOUR IN AKTSE AND FOOD ACTIVITY (B,L,D)

We eat breakfast in the cabin and prepare for a day out on skis or snowshoes. We enjoy lunch outside and during the late afternoon or evening our host Caisa will teach us how to bake traditional Sámi bread. Of course we will also see what the sky is holding for us tonight – a northern lights show maybe?

Distance on skis or snowshoes: between 5-10 km, depending on the weather and the condition of the group. Estimated time out skiing or snowshoeing between 3-6 hours.

DAY 4 WILDLIFE WITH PARK-RANGER AND SAUNA (B,L,D)

After breakfast in the cabin we will meet up with Jan Stuge, a retired park-ranger who has spent 30 years plus working in the area with wildlife preservation. He will teach us about the nature and wild animals in the area and we will search for tracks. During the late afternoon or evening we have the chance to enjoy a woodheated sauna. When the first stars appear in the night sky, we also look out for northern lights.

Distance on skis or snowshoes: about 2-6 km, estimated time out 4-5 hours

DAY 5 DAYTOUR TO SKIERFFE (B,L,D)

We enjoy another breakfast in the cabin and then make ourself ready for a long daytour. Today our goal is to reach the cliff Skierffe, a famous viewpoint over the Rapavalley and the peaks of Sarek national park. If you prefer a less adventurous activity, you can join Caisa ice-fishing on the lake. After that another chance to enjoy the woodheated sauna and also hopefully see the northern lights, after dinner in Caisa’s cabin.

Distance on skis or snowshoes: about 15 km in total, estimated time out 8 hours

DAY 6 BACK TO CIVILIZATION AND EXPLORE JOKKMOKK (B,L,D)

We enjoy our last breakfast in the cabin before heading back to Jokkmokk and Åsgård Guesthouse. During the afternoon you have the opportunity to explore Jokkmokk and maybe the Ájtte museum. We will finish the day with a nice dinner in Jokkmokk.

DAY 7 BACK TO LULEÅ (B)

Enjoy your last breakfast together with the group before heading back to Luleå in our mini-van. We will be in Luleå at around noon.

Common asked questions and answers

Do I have to be super-fit?

The Northern lights and off-grid life tour is a relatively easy tour and it do not necessarily require a good fitness level. The daytours is all optionable, but if you want to get the most out of the tour, we recommend that you are comfortable being outside longs hours and are somewhat in a good shape. For the longer daytour up on Skierffe, you have to be able to handle both thougher uphills and steeper downhills. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or would like to discuss your experience level.

How cold will it be?

During a week in March in Aktse and Sarek National Park we see all kinds of weather. We can experience sunshine and -15C degrees during the day but also +5C degrees with rain and strong winds. Night temperatures can drop down to -30C, but normally stays around -10C to -20C. But do not worry too much about the cold. Pack according to the packing list and listen to good advice from the guide team about how to stay warm and comfortable during your stay.

I am not a good skier; can I still go?

The Northern lights and off-grid cabinlife tour do not have skiing in focus, rather different kinds of winter experiences and activities. On the daytours you can choose to go on snowshoes instead, or simply stay in the cabin reading a book or enjoy the quiet surroundings instead!

I have high blood pressure; can I still go?

We do not automatically say no just because you have a medical condition but it should not be a high risk factor for you or the group, since we are far from civilization. We recommend that you talk to your doctor and make sure you have medication that you know works well for you. And please let us know when filling out the application form and we can discuss this with you before booking.

I am a vegetarian; can I join the team?

We are used to handling most food preferences and allergies, just let us know when filling out the application form. But with limited cooking space we can not handle too advanced requests or guarantee that it will be totally free from gluten or lactose etc. If you have a severe allergy please contact us to discuss this with us.
